Against the backdrop of high infant mortality rate in Nigeria, primary health care workers in Kwara State are being trained on integrated maternal, newborn and child health which is in line with the federal government’s Save One Million Lives (SOML) program.

The Lead Consultant (SOML) and public health physician, Mubashir Uthman during a training session of Public health workers in Kwara State said about one hundred and sixty-eight of them have been trained on recent interventions and technologies to reduce maternal and infant mortality rate in the state.
According to a new report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Nigeria ranks eleventh where newborn babies die due to lack of assistance during delivery, poverty, conflicts and weak health institutions which made the federal government establish the saving one million lives program to bridge the gap.
Participants at the one-week training session said it is an eye-opener as positive changes would be witnessed in Nigeria’s mortality rate.
