Codeine is an opiate used to treat pains, cough, and diarrhea. Recent statistics however show that this drug has become a substance of abuse by many Nigerians. And with rising concerns of the level of havoc caused by codeine addicts, this committee was put together by the pharmaceutical council of Nigeria to check and control its sale and use in the country.
The minister of health while inaugurating the committee, commended the council for coming up with the initiative given its relevance.
The minister will also want the committee to extend its roles to finding out why people engage in unprescribed use of codeine.
Though the initiative hopes to collaborate with other agencies of government to check the rising cases of drug abuse in the country.
