Nigeria's health minister says a nurse died of Ebola and the country has five additional confirmed cases of the disease. Onyebuchi Chukwu said Wednesday that all the Ebola cases are being treated in isolation in Lagos, sub-Saharan Africa's largest city with 21 million people. He said the nurse had treated the man who traveled from Liberia and died of Ebola in Lagos last month. The five other confirmed cases are believed to be health workers who treated Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer who was sick when he flew into Lagos and died days later on July 25.

An Algerian passenger plane has reportedly disappeared from radar while flying from Burkina Faso. A commercial jetliner disappeared over western Africa after losing contact with air traffic controllers, Algeria's state-run news agency reported Thursday. Authorities lost contact with the Air Algerie aircraft about 50 minutes after it took off from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, while flying to the Algiers, according to the Algerian Press Service. The news service gave no extra details other than the flight number AH5017.  It said the company initiated an "emergency plan" in the search for flight AH5017, which flies the four-hour passenger route four times a week. A company source told AFP that the missing aircraft was a DC-9, which can seat up to some 135 passengers, chartered from a Portuguese firm. According to a source within Air Algerie, some 110 people are listed as being on board the flight. Source: AFP

An explosion on a busy commercial road in the north Nigerian city of Kaduna killed several people on Wednesday, witnesses said. The blast scattered debris and dead bodies on the Alkali Road in the city, witness Muhammad Danfulani told Reuters by telephone. The bomb targeted moderate Islamic cleric, Dahiru Bauchi who had been travelling in the area, police added.  He escaped unhurt. It is unclear who was behind the blast. Militant Islamist group Boko Haram has carried out a wave of bombings and assassinations in Nigeria since it launched a brutal insurgency in 2009 to create an Islamic state. It often targets Muslim leaders who condemn its militant ideology. A trader, Yusuf Suleiman, said that he had counted 15 bodies in a police van after the explosion. Source: Reuters
